Fish Physiognomy

Touko Miikkulainen

Physiognomy, or the study of physical characteristic, is a pseudoscience that's been used as the basis for "scientific racism". It has seen a recent rennaissance of sorts with A.I. facial recognition technology. I wanted to ridicule this shitty practice by contrasting it with this cutesy fish: of course a fish isn't more intelligent because it has a taller body and so on. The same obviously goes for humans. Loosely inspired by 'Models of formal mutation from On Growth and Form (D’Arcy Thompson,1917) found in Graphesis (Johanna Drucker, 2014, p.27) and the book's weirdly neutral stance on physiognomy.
